UK surrogates’ characteristics, experiences, and views on surrogacy law reform

Abstract What are surrogates’ views on their experience with surrogacy, understanding of the law, and legal reform? We conducted an online retrospective survey women who underwent treatment as gestational surrogates in two UK-regulated IVF centres between March 2014 October 2021. Forty-seven responded outlining experiences surrogacy England/Wales context, understandings thoughts potential law reform. The ranged age, occupation, household income. Most were white, British women. While almost half family members or friends intended parents, largest category met parents through a non-profit organization. Two-thirds respondents had given birth to baby surrogate. Surrogates generally do not view themselves mother child that they carry support proposals for reforms would recognize from birth. More ambivalence is apparent relation expenses payments, though advertising supported. Draft new legislation expected be introduced UK 2023, results this study could inform public parliamentary debates come elsewhere. Moreover, can assist development good practice models care surrogate pathway.
